A group from the “Reichsarbeitsdienst” (lit. Reich Labour Service)

Group from the RAD (Reich Labour Service), likely in Austria in 1941; undated.

This photo shows men in the uniform of the Reich Labour Service (RAD).
The RAD emblem is clearly visible in the enlargement of the original—and somewhat less clearly in the enlargement of the version shown here.
Somewhere in a passing remark, Gruber briefly mentions a "time in the Labour Service." Unfortunately, he provides no details regarding when or for how long he served in the RAD.
In all likelihood, this must have been in 1940; the subsequent photos from France also support this conclusion.
However, with this image and the three that follow, there is also the possibility that the photos found their way into the Gruber collection by chance over the years and originated from another relative of the website operator.
