Wooden house in the Alps in May 1941
The date of the inscription suggests that this high-mountain excursion was organized by his training unit. In May 1941, recruits still received thorough and comprehensive training. With mounting casualties on the Eastern Front, this situation would change drastically in the years that followed. However, a second hypothesis is simply that, after completing recruit training and before being transferred to his permanent unit, Gruber was granted leave, part of which he spent in the Alps.
