Lunch by the Volkhov – on top of our bunker
This photo is essentially a continuation of the previous one. It may well show the same bunker where this group—with Lothar Gruber on the far right—is having lunch. The bunker is nearly complete; only the protective layer of earth on the roof is missing. While such an earth-covered bunker could not withstand a direct hit from a heavy shell, it offered excellent protection against bomb and shell fragments as well as long-range infantry fire.
